Methods & Materials

Samples were excavated by Dr. Britney Kyle and her team in Himera.

Step 1.

Epoxy casts of canine teeth are examined under a microscope and photographs are taken of the perikymata using Leica software (see figures 1 and 2 for detail).

Step 2.

An x-y micromanipulator is used to examine the entirety of the tooth and its perikymata under the dissecting microscope

(see figure 3 for full lab setup).

Step 3.

Measurements are taken of the individual perikymata on the Leica software and entered into an excel spreadsheet, with wider perikymata indicating LEH.

Step 4.

The number LEH and the age-at-first- defect are identified for each tooth in excel using established formulae (Hassett, 2012).

Step 5.

Chi-square and t-tests (statistical analysis) are performed to determine if any significant correlation exists between LEH and set variables (age, sex, burial style and necropolis).
